The territory has changed. Has your map?

The challenges facing leaders today rarely come with a clear playbook.

The problem keeps shifting. Priorities compete. Different stakeholders see different realities. What worked before no longer works in quite the same way.

So leaders do what capable people often do under pressure: try harder,
move faster, gather more information, add another strategy.

But sometimes the problem isn't a lack of effort, expertise or information.

It's that the map you're using to make sense of the situation no longer matches the territory you're trying to navigate.

That's The Map Gap.

And closing it is one of the central challenges of adaptive leadership.

Over two highly interactive days, you'll learn to recognise the maps shaping your leadership, expand your capacity to see beyond them, and navigate complexity with greater awareness, attention, accountability and agility.

Your success about developing the capacity to keep updating your understanding and response capacity as the territory changes.

Because in complex environments, the ability to redraw the map may matter more than the confidence to follow one.

Why adaptive challenges require a different kind of leadership

Some problems can be solved with expertise:

You identify the issue. Apply what you know. Implement the solution.

But adaptive challenges are different:

They involve competing perspectives, entrenched assumptions, uncertainty, loss, identity and change.

The difficulty isn't simply working out what to do. It's learning to see what's really happening.

And that's where leadership gets complicated.

None of us sees the territory directly. We filter what we notice. We interpret what it means. We draw conclusions. We form positions. And before we know it, we're responding not simply to reality but to our map of reality.

The Map Gap emerges when:

  • yesterday's assumptions shape today's decisions

  • leaders mistake their interpretation for the whole picture

  • teams agree on the problem but disagree about what it means

  • familiar solutions are repeatedly applied to unfamiliar challenges

  • pressure narrows perspective just when greater perspective is needed

  • different parts of the organisation are navigating from fundamentally different maps

Adaptive leadership begins with recognising the difference between the territory and the map.

What you’ll develop

When leaders develop greater awareness of the maps shaping their thinking, learn to direct their attention more deliberately, and take responsibility for how they interpret and respond to the territory around them, they become better able to adapt.

Awareness. Attention. Accountability. The foundations of adaptive leadership.

01

Awareness

See the map you're currently navigating from.

Recognise the assumptions, interpretations, patterns and automatic responses shaping how you lead — particularly when the pressure is on.

Learn to step back from the immediate situation and see more of the territory.

Develop the ability to notice the difference between what happened and the meaning you've made of it.

02

Attention

Direct your attention where it matters most.

Complexity creates noise.

Develop greater awareness of where your attention goes, what captures it and what you may be overlooking.

Learn to widen, narrow and shift your attention more deliberately, so you can stay connected to what is actually happening, rather than becoming consumed by the loudest, most urgent or most familiar signals.

03

Accountability

Take responsibility for the map you’re bringing to the territory.

Adaptive leadership requires more than holding others accountable.

It means examining your own role in the patterns you want to change.

Learn to move beyond blame, certainty and automatic reaction — and take greater ownership of how you interpret, influence and respond.
